Lemon

Lemon is the fruit of the lemon tree (Citrus x Limon), which belongs to the rutaceae family. Also known as true lemon, it has its origins in Southwest Asia.

Unknown for the ancient Greeks and Romans, the first reference about this citrus fruit is in Nabathae’s book on agriculture, dating back to the 3rd or 4th century.

Brought from Persia by Arabian conquerors, it spread throughout Europe. There are reports on lemon trees planted in Genoa in the middle of the 15th century, as well as references of its existence in the Azores, in 1494.
