Plum

    Description

It is considered that the origin of the plum is in the lands of the lower Danube in Persia, Armenia and Caucasus. Plums were brought by the Greeks and Romans, but Romans only started planting them later. It is said that in 812, Charlemagne planted various species of plum trees in his imperial properties. Today, plums have achieved a widespread popularity.

The authentic plum (Prunus domestica) has various names, in different regions. It belongs to the Rosaceae family.

The plums must be eaten raw, in large quantity; they are also a culinary ingredient used to make jelly and marmalade. Apart from being used as food, it has much greater significance as a medical dietetic remedy.
