It is spontaneous in tropical and subtropical areas of America.

Cultivated for its ornamental flower (like other species of the same botanical type), Passiflora edulis is also cultivated for commercial purposes, due to its fruit, in The Caribbean, South Florida and Brazil, which is the largest passion flower producer - and also consumer – all over the world. The passion flower of commercial use is round or ovoid, yellow or deep purple when it is ripe, and it has a great amount of seeds in its core.
