Plantain (also known as cooking banana or banana-da-terra) is a tropical fruit typically eaten cooked — whether baked, boiled, or fried — and serves as a staple food for many populations in tropical regions.

Although much of the production is intended for local consumption, around 10 to 15% is exported, with the United States and the European Union among the largest importers.
